Saigo Takamori, often called the last samurai, played an important, and later divisive, role in the Meiji Restoration. He led a rebellion against the newly established government in 1877 (Meiji 10), known as the Satsuma uprising. When he was defeated, he committed Seppuku (ritual suicide).
