Csingtao 1898-tól 1914-ig a németek által birtokolt kikötőváros volt, míg az I. világháborúban az egyesített brit és japán haderők augusztustól novemberig tartó ostrommal, a német és osztrák-magyar védőket legyőzve végül sikeresen bevették.
